Beginning February 6, you may come to this website to fill out and submit a Class Description Form for each class that you would like to teach this fall. Valentine’s Party

On Monday, February 13, we will be having a Valentine’s Party during lunch. For each participating child, please bring one dozen children’s Valentine cards with only the “From” portion filled in. Also include a small bag of Valentine candy so we can distribute treats among the participating children. When you drop off the valentines and candy, turn in your child’s homemade Valentine box or bag with your child’s name and age clearly written on it so your child can receive valentines as well. For anyone desiring to participate in the snack sharing portion of the party, drop off a small snack prior to lunch; finger food is appropriate. When you arrive for school on February 13, please drop off your party items on the table set up at the school entrance.

West Wichita Homeschool Ministries is a Christian homeschool group that aspires to endow our children with life skills through enrichment studies and academic courses. One day a week, we offer select classes for students from Pre-K through High School. Also throughout the year, as a group we provide opportunities for field trips and activities to enhance our children’s education.

Valentine's Party

Algebra 1 ~M03 [Gr. 9-12] 8:00-9:00am

Teacher: David Aronstein

Description: Algebra 1 (typically a 9th-grade math course) using the A Beka curriculum. I will expect students to have successfully completed pre-algebra, to have good study habits and to turn in their work on time.

Description: This class will continue to use the Lifepac Accounting module from Alpha Omega Publications. It will cover Accounting Systems, analyzing transactions, posting to the general ledger, preparing the worksheet, financial statements, adjusting and closing entries, payroll, and a business simulation.

Algebra 2 ~M02 [Gr. 9-12] 9:00-10:00am

Teacher: Deb Beat

Description: Factoring polynomials, quadratic formula, graphing conic sections, exponents, scientific notation, Radicals, Conjugate numbers, cubes and Pascal’s Triangle, Binomial Theorem, Completing the Square, imaginary and complex numbers. Each chapter covers one concept, we will learn a new concept each Monday, complete worksheet A in class. Then for homework students will need to complete worksheets B, review worksheets C and D then the Chapter Test. Unit Tests will also be completed at home. An answer key will be provided so parents can grade homework daily. Students will need to correct any problems they miss. In class students will be encouraged to ask any question regarding missed problems on homework.

Description: Students will learn about various hazards and risks inside the home and a few that may be encountered outside of the home. Topics covered will include basic first aid, how to get police/fire/ambulance services, accident avoidance, fire safety, firearm safety (Eddie Eagle-NRA), and other similar topics. Students will prepare a basic first aid kit to be kept in a home or vehicle.

Description: We will be doing a study in the book of Genesis. We will be reading from chapter to chapter while doing crafts, games, and possibly have a drama performed for the students which will be based on the topic being studied. The students will be required to memorize bible verses weekly, which will be either directly out of Genesis or out of another book on the same topic. We will be discussing what God is saying in each chapter, how it correlates to biblical prophesies, and what it means to us. We will be reading out of the King James Version and the New International Version.

Teacher: Crystal Cauthon

Description: A first-year high school lab-intensive Biology course with a detailed study of the Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia kingdoms. Some Animal kingdom subdivisions are studied further through dissections. There is also study of Ecology, Cells, Genetics, as well as an investigation of current events related to Biology including the hypotheses of evolution from a Biblical world view. This is a rigorous science class with homework on a daily basis and periodic teacher-graded tests.

Description: We will learn a little about the history of calendars then get a lot of practice with the days of the week and months of the year. We will do a little calendar math and counting practice. Finally, we will be celebrating the holidays that occur during the semester, as well as some of the lesser known special days.

Chemistry ~S02 [Gr. 10-12] 10:00am-12:00pm

Teacher: Crystal Cauthon

Description: A first-year high school chemistry course to prepare student for a college-level course. The course covers significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium. This is a 2-hour class covering lecture and labs. Tests will be administered by the parents and graded by the teacher. Homework will consist of reading, problems, questions, completing lab write-ups and taking the tests. This rigorous class will require 3-5 hours of study a week.

Chess: Advanced ~O01 [Gr. 6-12] 1:00-2:00pm

Teacher: Dr. DeJong

Description: Enrollment in this class is by teacher approval only. Chess is more than an ordinary game. It is about thinking and planning ahead. Although winning and losing are important to most participants, the real enjoyment is the beauty of the action on the board. Chance is essentially eliminated.
Course Outline: Continuation of tactical elements, Continuation of more strategic elements, deeper consideration of endgame play, more explicit introduction to opening play, analysis of tournament games. The student will be expected to participate in at least 2 tournaments each semester. This may be either a scholastic tournament in Kansas or other generally recognized and rated tournament.

Chess: Beginning ~O06 [Gr. 5-12] 11:00am-12:00pm

Teacher: Dr. DeJong

Description: Chess is more than an ordinary game. It is about thinking and planning ahead. Although winning and losing are important to most participants, the real enjoyment is the beauty of the action on the board. Chance is essentially eliminated. The first day the student will be introduced to the board, the King and the Rooks. After the first day, the students will use about half the class time using the new material in actual game play. Each class will generally follow the plan of reviewing what was learned the previous weeks, then covering new material, generally another man or piece, and then practice with other students on both old and new material. The student is asked to keep and bring to class a notebook. As the pawns and pieces are learned, the play will become more complicated and in essence the student will be playing middle games and even a little opening experience. The student will be introduced to record keeping. A crucial way to learn to play better is the review of one's own games. Final Exam: completed notebook and good class attendance.
Extra Note: Dr. DeJong is a retired doctor that loves chess. He expects students to have good attendance and listening skills.

Prerequisites: An interest in learning about chess and a willingness to learn the etiquette of chess, including courtesy. Must have good listening skills and be able to concentrate on the subject for a full hour.

Description: (HS) (Y) This flexible course will concentrate on five areas of college prep: goal setting and study skills, logic and thinking skills, writing for college, SAT/ACT prep and CLEP prep. Two of the areas will be covered in the first semester: Goal setting and study skills and the SAT/ACT prep. Ongoing studies of logic and thinking skills, writing for college and CLEP prep all year with special concentration in the second semester. This course is for college bound high school students or for recently graduated high school home schooled students who wish help in developing skills for college and/or students planning to CLEP exams.CLEP exams of specific subjects will not be worked on as a group unless all the students plan to take the same exam but we will be sharing some information on which exams are best to begin with, how to find which exams your college accepts and ideas for studying for CLEP exams.Completion of both Traditional Logic 1 and 2 would earn your student 1.0 credit hours in logic, completion of Advanced Communication, High School Essay Intensive, and The Elegant Essay would certainly qualify your student to earn .50 credit hours in composition. You should also be able to include an elective entitled College Planning for .50 credit hours as well on a transcript for completion of the Life Purpose Workbook, Memory and Study Skills and Maximum Speed Reading as well as the SAT/ACT Prep.

Decription: We are really looking forward to this class! Drama is a great addition to any language arts program, promoting listening, speaking, reading, writing, and often expanding vocabulary. In this class, we will learn through many activities including improvisational activities, pantomimes, storytelling, and short dialogs. By the end of the semester, drama students should be able to identify characters, situations and settings, as well as why the drama was created.

Participation is required, so please make sure this is a subject your child is interested in.

First class I will bring several games and explain how to treat games, etc... A list of who will bring games will be started. Description: This study over the Gospel of John is adapted from a class I recently completed at the Urban Ministry Institute. We will use the official student workbook put out by the Urban Ministry Institute in our class, along with a commentary entitled “Everyman’s Bible Commentary – John” by Robert W. Yarbrough. The student workbook and commentary are both published by The Urban Ministry Institute and will need to be purchased through me. In the course of this class, we will read through the book of John in the Bible, watch portions of the movie “Gospel of John” each week in class, discuss through our workbook and the Yarbrough commentary, and learn how to exegete Scripture. There will be homework throughout the week for this class, including reading, writing summaries on the reading for that week, Scripture memorization, a Ministry project, and an Exegetical project. Also, we will have regular quizzes in class to test the students’ comprehension on what they are reading, as well as things we have discussed in class. This is a great class for those who may have an interest in entering the ministry, those who want to learn how to read and understand God’s Word better, or for those who are interested in gaining a more significant knowledge of Christ.

I will try to keep the prices for the costumes as low as possible. Each semester towards the last 6 weeks we have extra practices which the students are expected to attend. Worldviews of the Western World Yr1 ~H10 [Gr. 9-12] 8:00-10:00am

Description: This is a multi-disciplined world view study covering ancient literature (Iliad, Odyssey, Aenid, City of God and The Republic), ancient history , humanities, and philosophy. The backbone of the study is Francis Schaeffer’s How Should We Then Live book and DVD series. A large syllabus is required which includes study notes, comments, questions and essay questions.
Upon the conclusion of this one year study, your student would have earned the following credits according to Cornerstone Curriculum: ¼ credit Composition - 1 credit Ancient Literature - 1 credit Philosophy/Theology - ¼ credit Western Civilization - ¼ credit Humanities - ¼ credit World History - 3 credits total would be earned by completing this study. Although it is possible to do this on your own, there is no answer key and you would have to buy DVD’s and CD’s in addition to your books. By doing this together, we will provide the opportunity for your student to listen to the DVD’s and audio CD’s in class. Two hours of class time will be required. Your student will be spending about 3 hours per day on this class, so probably math, science and maybe foreign language would make a complete schedule. If your student has class conflicts, we will be dividing this class into 1 hour for literature/humanities and 1 hour philosophy/Western Civ/World History so that your student could sit in on one hour of class and either earn ½ of the credits or do the remaining syllabus on his own and we could grade it for full credit (video/audio times would have to be arranged if he wasn’t in class). If your student has to be absent, make-up times for watching videos, CD’s will be provided at one of the teacher‘s homes.
